Do I need pet waste removal in winter?

People assume freezing sterilizes waste. It doesn't. Roundworm eggs survive freezing temperatures for months, and giardia cysts do well in cold, damp conditions — exactly what a Northern Virginia January provides. A yard that goes unscooped from December to March is holding roughly a season's worth of pathogens waiting for warm ground.

The thaw is the real problem. When the ground softens, everything that froze in place breaks down simultaneously and washes toward storm drains and the Chesapeake watershed. That's also when yards smell worst and when homeowners call for a catch-up clean that costs more than the winter visits they skipped.

Service does change in winter. Snow cover can hide waste, so we work by known traffic patterns and return after a melt if a visit was partially blocked. Frozen waste is actually easier to remove cleanly than summer waste. We don't charge extra for cold-weather visits, and you can pause any week you travel.
