The one nobody warns you about: parvo lives in soil
Canine parvovirus can survive in soil for up to a year and is frequently fatal in unvaccinated puppies. If a previous dog used your yard — or if you've just bought a house and don't know its history — that matters before your puppy's vaccine series is complete.
Practical response: keep an incompletely vaccinated puppy off unknown ground, remove any existing waste thoroughly, and ask your vet when it's safe to let them roam. A one-time cleanup before the puppy arrives is a genuinely useful precaution if the yard has been sitting.
Pick the potty zone before day one
Puppies learn location fast if you're consistent. Choose a spot with these properties: reachable in bad weather, visible from a window, away from patios, play equipment, and vegetable beds, and easy to clean. Take them there every time for the first two weeks and it usually sticks for life.
Check the fence at puppy height
Gaps you never noticed at adult-dog scale are escape routes at eight weeks. Walk the entire perimeter crouched down: gaps under gates, loose pickets, deck skirting, and the space where the fence meets a slope are the usual culprits.
Plants worth knowing about
Several common Northern Virginia landscape plants — azalea, rhododendron, sago palm, and daffodil bulbs among them — are toxic to dogs. Puppies chew indiscriminately. Identify what's in your beds now rather than during an emergency vet call, and check anything unfamiliar against the ASPCA's toxic plant list.
Build the cleanup habit immediately
A puppy produces waste far more often than an adult dog — five or more times a day is normal early on. The habit you build in month one is the habit you keep. Whether you do it yourself daily or put the yard on a service, decide now, because "I'll get to it this weekend" is how yards get away from people.
Why the frequency matters
Beyond parvo, roundworm eggs shed in waste become infectious after two to four weeks in soil and remain viable for years afterward. Removing waste weekly means those eggs never reach the infectious stage in your yard — which matters most in households with both a puppy and small children.
